Killing Time Online

August 10, 2011

Sometimes you get tired of the online cycle of going from Twitter to email to Facebook and back to Twitter again. Here are five ways to mix things up and waste a solid 10 minutes of your day, when you’re actually supposed to filing TPS reports or something.

1. Go to the website of an alcoholic beverage and when they ask for your age before entering the site, tell them you’re under 21. You’ll be denied access, but the people who put together the site will feel like they hadn’t completely wasted their time by making that page. You’ll have wasted about 2 minutes, and done your good deed for the day.

2. Google yourself and find that old Xanga site you started one night in college when you were supposed to be writing a paper on Mary Shelley’s impact on feminist literature. Try reading a few entries until you feel sufficiently embarrassed by your 19-year-old self.

3. Log in to Facebook, find really old pictures of your friends, and start leaving comments on each photo. Your friends will wonder why you were stalking them by looking at photos that are five years old, and you’ll finally remember how you know that girl who friended you last month. (Oh yeah! She was my old roommate’s roommate from freshman year who wore the same hoodie for three months straight!)

4. Go to the website of your local small town newspaper. Look through the police report and see if you recognize anyone. Then look through the wedding and engagement announcements and see if any of the couples are old classmates. Or if any of them would make a good candidate for Awkward Family Photos.

5. Read My Life is Twilight and realize that even though you’ve been wasting your time on the internet, there are worse things that could be filling your life.

What are some websites or blogs you visit to waste time? My new favorite is Pinterest.

Pinterest is my new favorite, too. http://Sporcle.com is also excellent for killing time, and it claims to be mentally stimulating, so that’s a bonus.

The first thing I saw on Sporcle was a thing for crosswords. SOLD.
